High G Level Random Vibration Profile

Operating the vibration shaker at these levels is difficult because fixture resonances can create control problems causing the test to abort.  First a suitable fixture had to be designed by DES.  Then DES analyzed the fixture using FEA to make sure that it would not have significant resonances below 2000 Hz.  After the fixture was manufactured, it was first tested without product on the shaker to verify its performance.  The fixture performed as designed and did not have any significant resonances that would be imparted into the product under test or cause control problems.  The next step was to mount the product to the fixture and perform the high g level random vibration test.  During the vibration test, the part had to be electrically monitored for operation.  The well designed product passed the test and the customer was very satisfied with the test results and DES’s capabilities.  For more information on Vibration Testing or other testing services, contact DES or call 610.253.6637.

New technologies have made this increasingly easier, a trend Digital Engineering looks at in their new article, “The SMB Case for Simulation” by Brian Albright.

Delserro Engineering Solutions was pleased to take part in this piece, which appeared in May.

“There’s no substitute for testing, but it can be more expensive and more time-consuming than running a simulation,” DES President Gary Delserro said in the article. “If you study and understand how to design the product right the first time, it will reduce that test time and cost.”

He continued:

“If you test something and it fails, you might spend a week setting it up and a week testing it, and then you have to go back and do a failure analysis,” Delserro adds. “You can spend three or four weeks on a program like that. If you had done some accurate simulation up front, you could have found that problem in less than a week, so you’d have significant time savings.”

Delserro also spoke to Digital Engineering about the importance of finding an engineering firm with simulation expertise.

“Be careful that the company you work with has a track record in your industry and check their references,” he said. “If you haven’t got any experience in simulation, it can be worth it to have someone who knows what they are doing to handle those first projects.”

• We completed a Pyroshock test on our Mechanical Impact Pyroshock Simulator (MIPS) on equipment that will fly into outer space.
• On the other end of the altitude spectrum, we completed environmental testing of components that will be used in submarines to MIL-E-917.  MIL-E-917 is a military specification for Naval shipboard electric power equipment.
• In the middle of the altitude range, we performed combined temperature and vibration testing on sensors that will be used in automobile engines to specification GMW 3172.  GMW 3172 is a General Motors Specification for electronic component durability.
